What is amplitude?

Amplitude in Physics is the value of the maximum displacement from a zero value during one period of an oscillation

Amplitude can however mean many different things, depending on the topic for instance in electromagnetic radiation, the amplitude corresponds to the electric field of the wave. The square of the amplitude is proportional to the intensity of the wave.
